Rev. Frederick Halloran dies in Ireland

North Kingstown - The Rev. Frederick J. Halloran, 61, pastor of St. Bernard Church Tower Hill Road, Wickford, died Monday while vacationing in Sligo, Ireland.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late William T. and Katherine J. (Reilly) Halloran.

Father Halloran was a 1954 graduate of Providence College, and a member of the ROTC. He served as a first lieutenant in the Army from 1954-1956. He studied philosophy at Our Lady of Providence Seminary, Warwick. He studied theology at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, MD.

He was ordained June 8, 1963, at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence, by the late Bishop Russell J. McVinney, D.D.

After a summer assignment as chaplain of the Christian Brothers Noviate, Narragansett, he was appointed assistant pastor of St. Paul Church, Cranston. In 1968, he became assistant director of the Catholic Youth Organization of the Diocese of Providence, then its director in 1969 with residence at St. Rose Rectory, Warwick.

From 1970 to 1977, he was also diocesan Boy Scout chaplain. His first assignment as pastor was in March 1981, at St. Teresa Church, Providence, until he was transferred to St. Bernard Church May, 1987.

He leaves a sister, Ann Marie Stone of Warwick, and three brothers, William M. Halloran of Warwick, Rev. John C. Halloran, pastor of St. Gregory the Great Church, Warwick, and Edward P. Halloran of Lincoln.

A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10am at St. Bernard Church. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
