Wayne W. Brant, 94, formerly of York County, died Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Cross Keys Village, The Brethren Home Community. He was the husband of the late Leah E. (Godfrey) Brant.

Born June 24, 1921, in York County, he was the son of the late John S. and Lola M. (Walker) Brant.

Wayne graduated from Dallastown High School and attended Penn State College before World War II. During the war, he worked the family dairy farm near Dallastown. Later he was employed with Caterpillar Tractor Company for 27 years.
While working at Caterpillar, he and his family raised and sold vegetables on a small farm near Red Lion.

Wayne felt great pride in his service as a Seagoing Cowboy immediately following World War II. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (UNRRA) collaborated with the Brethren Service Committee to send live cargo, primarily horses and cattle, to Europe. UNRRA supplied the ships and the horses while the Brethren Service Committee provided the cattle and the "cowboys." Wayne was on one of the first ships to Europe, a Liberty Ship, The SS Zona Gayle. The ship went to France with 160 horses and 150 heifers in 1945. Seventy years later, Wayne was recognized twice for his service, most recently at the Faith Community Church in Cross Keys.

Wayne was a member and Deacon of the First Church of the Brethren in York and attended the Faith Community Church in Cross Keys. He was devoted to his religion and its service to the community.

Wayne is survived by his three sons, Daniel L. Brant of Shippensburg, Philip W. Brant of Severna Park, Md. and Paul D. Brant of Cambridge, Md.; a daughter, Carolyn A. Strum of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John S. Brant, Jr. of Dallastown; and a sister, Shirley C. Ferree of York.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Esther M. Hoover of Rockville, Md. and Bernice G. Butcher of York.

A memorial service will be held at the Nicarry Meeting House at Cross Keys Village on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at 2 p.m. at 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford, PA, with Pastor Linda S. Titzell officiating.
