Jerry Peter Roemer was born in Iowa City, Iowa on September 12, 1938. He was the son of Helen and Peter H. Roemer.

Pete graduated from St. Ambrose Academy in 1956 where he excelled in football. Pete was a natural athlete. In 1975 Dr. John Sunderbruch, longtime attending physician for St. Ambrose Academy and Assumption High School football teams, identified Pete as one of the great athletes he oversaw during his tenure.

In the fall of 1955, as a senior in high school, Pete was named first team all-state center. He received offers of full football scholarships from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Iowa, among other Universities. He was to start his college education at Notre Dame in the fall of 1955, however, the night before he was to leave for Notre Dame he was involved in a serious automobile accident. He attended the 1956 spring and summer semesters at Notre Dame. He then dropped out of Notre Dame and went to work for his father at Roemer Machine and Welding.

Pete and Janice Hanrahan were married on November 29, 1958.

In early 1960, and realizing the value of education, Pete contacted the University of Iowa football program and they were more than willing to offer him a full football scholarship and Pete was more than happy to play football again.

Pete attended the University of Iowa from September, 1960 to May 1969. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Iowa in 1967. Pete excelled academically in dental school. He continued his education and received a Master of Science and a certificate in orthodontics in 1969.

Pete established his orthodontic practice in Bettendorf, Iowa in June, 1969. He retired from that practice in 1996. Pete was also an entrepreneur and was involved in several businesses throughout his life.

Pete had a thirst for knowledge and throughout his life he sought to further educate himself. He also exercised throughout life, whether it be squash, tennis, racket ball, jogging, walking or biking.

Pete was somewhat of a renaissance man. He loved to travel in the United States and abroad, visiting art museums and going to the theatre, the ballet and the opera in Chicago, Europe, New York City, and the Quad Cities. He traveled around the world for five weeks to celebrate his 50th birthday.

Pete had a great sense of humor. He loved life and had a real zest for it, so much so that he cheated death several times. In the year of 1955 alone, Pete survived an automobile accident, a motor-cycle accident and a private plane crash. He also survived strokes at the ages of 45 and 58 and open heart surgery at the age of 68.

Pursuant to Pete's wishes his brain has been donated to Mayo Clinic in Rochester in an effort to assist in research for the prevention and cure of dementia and Alzheimer's.

In addition to Janice Hanrahan Roemer, Pete is survived by his son and daughter-in-law; Mark and Kelly (Dwyer) Roemer and their children: Jack Dwyer Roemer, Spence Henri Roemer and Stella Francis Roemer, Bettendorf, Iowa. He is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Mary Jo Hanrahan Hasenmiller and Dick Hasenmiller, Elgin, Illinois.

Pete was preceded in death by his son Peter John Roemer and his grandson Henri Dwyer Roemer.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jane's Place at Casi, 1035 West Kimberly Road, Davenport, Iowa 52806.
