"Murder in East Tennessee"
from the Overland Banner
On Monday evening last, about miles north of this place, in this County, Allen P Dukes was killed at his own house, under the following circumstances;
Dukes, William Wooden **NOTE**
******William Henry Wooden usually went by Henry, he was born about 1831, and is in the 1850, 1860, & 1870 Bradley Co TN census,A William Henry Wooden is Voting in San Joaquin Co CA in 1871, I have not been able to trace him further, It does not seem like he was punished for this crime****** Holiday Spivey #85708501 & William Stanfield #85132623 had all been to Cleveland, and left late in the evening for their homes. On their way home they all stopped at the house of Mr Dukes. Wooden was drinking, and probably Dukes too. Wooden used some vulgar or profane language, when Dukes hit Wooden with a fire-shovel; Wooden then went out of the house; Spivy & Stanfield left about this time, believing a difficulty was imminent. Mrs Dukes, had gone a short distance to turn her husbands horse in a pasture field. This left only Wooden and Dukes at the house . When Mrs Dukes returned she found her husband dead outside of the house, he having received a fatal stab in the left breast, near the heart, with a knife-his skull had been fractured by blows, apparently inflicted with a heavy fire-shovel. Wooden has been arrested and held over for his appearance at court & a bond of $5,000.00. These facts we gather from a gentleman who was present at the investigating trial. We have no doubt but Whiskey was at the bottom of the difficulty-Wooden & Dukes had been friendly up to a few minutes before the killing took place; lived in the same neighborhood, and Wooden on that day had brought some goods for Dukes from one of our Merchants, which proves that the best of feeling existed between them.
