Sept. 14, 1927 - April 23, 2016 Amiel Word Brinkley, Jr., passed away on April 23, 2016, at the age of 88. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Myrtice Willson Brinkley and Amiel Word Brinkley and lived most of his life in Mobile, Alabama.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Katharine Hamilton Brinkley, and his grandson Thomas Hughes Brinkley.

He is survived by his daughters Catharine Davies Rauch (Jack) and Elizabeth Hamilton Brinkley, his son Thomas Hamilton Brinkley (Katherine), his sister Peggy Brinkley McClelland (Ponnie), his grandchildren Alex Davies, Katharine Davies, Brinkley Hutchings, John Brinkley and Sam Brinkley, nephews and great nieces and nephews, and many treasured friends.

Affectionately known as "Brink", he graduated cum laude from Sewanee Military Academy in 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. He graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for 27 years in research at International Paper Company. He was a member of Christ Church Cathedral where he was a vestryman serving as Junior and Senior Warden. He also served on the boards of the National Council on Alcoholism, the Southwest Alabama Council on Alcoholism, the Education Council of MIT, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the United Fund of Mobile County, the Alabama Math and Science School Foundation, and was Chairman of the Board of Julius T. Wright School for Girls. Mr. Brinkley enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing, and loved sharing with children and friends the joys of the natural world of the Gulf Coast. He delighted in entertaining with stories and jokes, and particularly loved performing magic tricks for young children.

Following a family graveside service, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, at 2:00 at Christ Church Cathedral. A visitation will follow in the parish hall. His family greatly appreciates the staff at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort and will always be grateful to his caregivers, Donna Regan and Toni Robinson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Christ Church Cathedral, 115 S. Conception Street, Mobile, Alabama, 36602, or to a favorite charity .
