Walter was the son of Moses and Sara Thompson Southward. He married Drusella Kronk on 15 June 1937 in Steuben County, Indiana. After her death in 1952, he married Mildred Gisler. Walter served in the navy in WWII and was honorably discharged. He had 3 years of high school and worked as a crane man in the LOF glass factory. Walter died in an auto accident.
