Keith Wynder Burt had prepared himself to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Letter-Day Saints and was enroute to a South American Mission.

He was traveling on the 'Vestris' when the ship developed a severe starboard list, was abandoned, and sank approximately 200 miles off Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Of the 111 people who lost their lives, Elder Keith Wynder Burt was among them. His body was never recovered.
