Andrew P. Papanek, age 83, of Avon, CT, was the husband of Nancy Mae (Anderson) Papanek.

Born in Bridgeville, PA, son of the late Andrew and Margaret Papanek, he was raised in Pennsylvania and served in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, Company Commander, in Korea from 1946-1948.

He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering with an Honorary Scholarship from University of Pittsburgh, as one of the top 10 graduates in his class of 1950 and an MS in Aeronautical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology in 1952. Complicated engineering projects, electromechanical and electro hydraulic systems were his strengths along with strong leadership, management, and business skills. He loved his work and for over 30 years he participated in all phases of Corporate/Division management; including managing Lear Siegler, Inc. for eleven years, general manager of Veeder Industries in Hartford for six years and vice president of Rockwell International. He became President of Jacobs Manufacturing in Hartford in 1971 and Qualitrol in Fairport, NY in 1966 and led these companies to significant profit increases and increased market share.

He pursued and consummated acquisitions of over eleven manufacturing firms. He purchased his current company, Puritan Industries, Inc., a division of The Torrington Company, and moved it to Collinsville. Puritan Industries manufactures and markets worldwide, high speed, heavy duty stitching machines used for the manufacture of footwear, luggage, leather, and sporting goods. He lived in West Simsbury for eleven years moving to Avon 20 years ago. Andrew had been a member of the Young Presidents Organization and currently was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He enjoyed sailing, golfing, gardening and traveling with his wife Nancy, including trips to several continents.

He was survived by his wife Nancy Mae (Anderson) Papanek of Avon; three sons, Andrew "Drew" Papanek of Winsted, John Papanek and his wife Jill of Woodbury, and Thomas Papanek of Torrington; two daughters, Peg Papanek of Norfolk and Andrea Papanek and her husband Kevin Napaver of Marblehead, MA; four grandchildren, Michael, Kendra, Zachary and Matthew Papanek.

His former wife and mother of his children, Carol Sue Papanek Zeffiro and his brothers and sisters predeceased him.
