The second son and third of eight children born to William Lindsay (1777-1841) and Elisabeth Briggs (1784-1871), Robert C. Lindsay was a physician. He married Emily P. Doak (1820-1879) in 1837.

Robert and Emily had at least eight children: Eberle D. Lindsay (1838-3 Oct. 1910), Robert James Lindsay (29 Jan. 1840-31 Aug. 1928, m. Georgia James, went to Philadelphia), Mary Adelaide Lindsay (19 Dec. 1842-6 Feb. 1900, m. Adolphus Lafayette Shuford, lived at Hickory, NC), William M. Lindsay (25 May 1847-22 June 1854), Ella Lindsay (c.1850-9 Nov. 1854), Anna E. Lindsay (6 Feb. 1855-9 Aug. 1916, m. Charles Jackson Ogburn, lived at Winston-Salem, NC), Lula Lindsay (16 Oct. 1856-7 March 1939, m. I Hughes Fisher), and Charles W. "Charlie" Lindsay (c. Dec. 1863/5-11 June 1904).
