Uncommonly for a woman of her generation, especially one orphaned so young, Johnie completed high school and the training to become a Registered Nurse. At age 35, she married James Edward Elmick (1899-1952) on 30 April 1932 in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. She and her husband lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she was active in her professional organization and also a prominent member of the Philharmonic Society. Johnie was a gifted vocalist, a soprano.
Johnie had no children but retained very close ties with her family. One of her brothers, George Edgar Warren (1890-1968), was a physician in Corpus Christi. Her other brother, Daniel Davis Warren (1894-1973) was also a physician in Texas. Her sister Harriet Rebecca (Hattie) Warren Lamkin (1892-1974), lived in Mississippi. She had many nieces and nephews.
