After the war, Irvin and Frances returned to Plattsburgh where he and Gordon Burdo were partners in the Lavin Candy Company. After 46 years, Irvin retired and his sons, Irvin Jr. and Philip are now partners in the business.
Irvin was active in the community. He served twenty-five years on the Board of the State Bank of Albany; he worked with the Clinton County United Way Campaign for many years and served as Chairman of the 1975 drive; he was on the Board of the Kiwanis Club and helped build the YMCA Camp on Rand Hill; he was active in the Elk’s Club where he was a Past Exalted Ruler and a member of the Friday Night Men’s Bowling League until 1992. Irvin was active with the YMCA, the New Industries for Clinton County and the Champlain Development Group. He received the Liberty Bell Award for his outstanding community service from the Clinton County Bar Association.
Irvin was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He spent many happy summers with his family at their camp on Cumberland Head and later retired there. He is survived by four daughters and two sons and their families, Irvin Jr., Patti, Andrew, Philip and Joseph Reid of Plattsburgh; Helen Reid of Warwick, R.I.; Frieda and Elizabeth Coursen of Northbridge, Mass.; Mary Jane, Matthew and John Backman of Saco, Maine; Philip, Luke, Maxwell and Laura Reid of West Chazy; and Phyllis, Michael, David and Jake Lieberman of Old Tappan, N.J. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen and Teddy James of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Lila and John Finley of Purvis, Miss., and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Helen Donahue, Darlene Burke, Laura Facteau and Barbara Dey for the excellent care they gave Irvin.
Calling hours will be Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. from the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. from St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Cumberland Head. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery.
