Sophia Amanda Parkhurst was born in Oswego, Kendall County, IL on December 25, 1839. She married James Allison (1834 - 1904) on June 6, 1860 in Kendall County, IL. Sophia died December 28, 1907 in State Centre, Iowa.

Mrs. Sophia Amanda Allison was born December 25, 1839, near Oswego, Ill, and passed to her reward from State Center, Iowa, December 28, 1907 (a Saturday), being aged 68 years and 3 days. She was the daughter of Mr. Nahum A. and Mrs. Roxanna Parkhurst, and was one of five children. Three daughters and two sons. Her school days were spent in the public schools of Oswego and Lisbon, Ill. Here she began, what she always continued to do, viz.: To study those topics which have been and always will be of most importance to the human race, such as the arts, sciences, history and religion. Having qualified herself, she was employed for several terms as a public school teacher.

On June 6, 1860, she was married to Mr. James Allison, and went with him at once to live at Vienna, Ill., but soon afterward moved to Carthage, Missouri. In 1872 they moved to State Center, Iowa, where she had continued to reside, except for the period between 1887 and 1896 when for the sake of the two children their residence was in Grinnell, Iowa. The deceased made a public profession of her faith in Christ as her Saviour in 1866 and at that time was received into the Baptist church. On April 28, 1907, she with her son was received into the Presbyterian church at State Center. For forty-one years she has publicly borne testimony to her faith in Jesus as her Saviour. She was a diligent student of the Bible, and was thus well qualified to be a Bible teacher, which she was in her home and in the Sunday school. Of her near relatives she leaves her two children Miss Mary Allison and James P. Allison, and her brother, Amos J. Parkhurst of Oswego. These have the sympathy of many who share with them the loss of one who has been a blessing in directing their thoughts to nobler aspirations and can say with the prophet: "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them."

The funeral took place from the house of her brother, Amos J. Parkhurst, where she had been taken, Tuesday afternoon. Her home pastor came with the remains and officiated, assisted by Rev. E. Harris of this place. The singing was rendered by Mrs. Anna Smith, Mrs. Josie Hall, Albert Potts and Will Elwood. The burial was in the Cowdrey cemetery where the deceased, some time after the death of her husband, came here and under her supervision had a monument erected under which were deposited in an urn the ashes of her husband, whose body was cremated, and there the remains of both are resting now side by side.
