VETERAN IS GONE
Capt. Andrew P. Coffinberry Passes Away.
Resident of City since 1842 Succumbs After Illness of Several Weeks' Duration.

Capt. Andrew P. Coffinberry, one of the city's oldest residents and for the last twelve years a clerk and draftsman in the city assessor's office, died at 8 o'clock this morning at his home, 210 Jefferson avenue, after several weeks; illness. He was seventy years old. He was born in Mansfield, O., in June, 1837, and at the age of five years moved with his parents to Grand Rapids, where he had since made his home.
Served Through War.
At the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted under his father, Wright L. Coffinberry, as private in the First Michigan engineers and mechanics and served through the entire war, being discharged Sept. 22, 1865, with the rank of captain. He was a civil engineer by profession and was for years identified with railroad work. As assistant engineer and later as auditor of the Prninsular road, which some years ago operated between Lansing and Bbalpariso, Ind., he became well known in Michigan railroad circles.
In October, 1895, he entered the employ of the city in the assessors' office, acting as clerk and draftsman, his engineering ability making him especially fitted for the work. For twelve years he had held position through the various political changes and was highly respected and admired by his associates.
While his friends had noticed his failing health for more than a year he had been able to attend to his duties with fair regularity until about a month ago when he was confined to his bed. Since that time he had become weaker and weaker until the end came this morning.
Deceased was a member of Custer post. G. A. R., and was also a member of the local organization of the Sons of Veterans. He is survived by a widow and two sisters, Rebecca J. and Julia F. Coffinberry, who made their home with him. The funeral will be held at Grace church Wednesday morning at 10:30, the Rev. Godolphin officiating. Custer post will conduct services at the grave.
