Burwell C Jackson was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism at Soissons France,where he made the supreme sacrifice. Burwell died serving his country.

Private, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, US Army. Entered the service from North Carolina. Missing in Action. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross; from his citation: "For extraordinary heroism In action near Soissons, France, July 19, 1918. He, alone, captured a machine gun, killed two of the crew, and took the remaining three prisoners. Later in the same day he was killed while making a similar attempt."
