James Harland BeVier was born Jan. 27, 1938, in Reed City, Mich., the son of Theodore Newton and Mildred May (Benton) BeVier. On April 11, 1959, James was united in marriage to Bernadette Anne Schmuker at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. James was employed by Wolverine Tannery in Michigan until 1967, when he relocated to Iowa to continue with the company. When the tannery closed, James went to work for Thatcher Plastics until its closing. He then spent a few years at the Muscatine Clinic and eventually retired from residential services in 2000. After retirement, James stayed busy working for Ace Hardware until its closing. He spent a short time at the Menards lumberyard and officially retired once Ace Hardware closed its doors. James was a member of Ss. Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, the United States Bowling Association and a past member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, scroll saw work, gambling, going on bus trips, traveling across the United States and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
James will be deeply missed by his wife, Bernadette, Muscatine; children, Laura (James) Birch, Muscatine, Lisa (Brian) Wymer, Grandview, Iowa, Linda (Tom) Day and Louise (Don) McDonough, all of Muscatine, James (Karen Sickles) BeVier, Red Bluff, Ark., and John (Carolyn) BeVier, Muscatine; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Leona, Charlie, Bud, L.J., Shirley, Betty and Barb; and several aunts and uncles.
