Ronald was the son of Louis Anna Adams of Arvada Colorado and Coy W. Adams who predeceased his son. On July 5, 1967 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in Denver and arrived in Vietnam on December 9 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of January the Battalion Command Post was located at Phu Loc in Thua Tien Province, the Marines being assigned a security operation to safe guard traffic on the main supply route running between Hue/Phu Bai and DaNang.

The enemy constantly mined the highway and destroyed bridges, carrying out harassing attacks on convoys in order to disrupt traffic and resupply. To combat the enemy tactics the Marines sent out patrols and set up daily ambushes to interdict and engage them before they could inflict damage to the friendly forces.

On Jan 23, at approximately 2015 hours, a squad from Company D while moving to set up an ambush south of Highway 1 in the vicinity of the Thon Trung Kien village complex was with a volley of enemy rifle fire. The Marines returned fire and searched the area but the enemy had slipped away in the darkness. During the brief exchange of fire,4 Marines were wounded and PFC Adams was killed by the hostile rifle fire.
