Jessica E. Grandy was a founder of the Fairview Park Community Council and a former member of the Fairview Park Library Board. She organized and chaired the Combined Health Drive in Fairview Park until the United Appeal succeeded it.

When the Community Council named her Fairview Park's Citizen of the Year in 1961, it cited her willingness to volunteer whenever there was a job to be done, for the city or any resident.

Mrs. Grandy died Nov. 30 at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Avon. She was 93.

She was born in Bennington, Vt. She moved to Cleveland in 1921 and married Clayton Grandy two years later. In 1936, they moved to the Coffinberry Estates subdivision in Fairview Park, where Mrs. Grandy soon became active in civic affairs.

She chaired the Red Cross drive in the community and received a certificate for meritorious service in 1945. She volunteered at Fairview Community Church. She also was active in the PTA and Civil Defense work.

When she was in her 60s, Mrs. Grandy became a popular baby sitter in the community. She enjoyed reading to young children and helping them with their homework. And she maintained contact with families as their children graduated from college and married.
