Born about 1608 and baptized at Eastwell, Kent on 21 Aug 1608, Thomas Howse was a son of Rev. John Howse and Alice (Lloyd) Howse and the husband of Elizabeth (Checkett) Howse Smith.

Formerly an officer in the Honourable Artillery Company, he was a captain in the Parliamentarian Army's 'Red Regiment of Westminster' during the English Civil War.
