Prior to retirement, he was employed by Anderson School District Five as Assistant Superintendent for Finance. He was a US Army Veteran having served with the 4th Infantry Division stationed in Vietnam, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with “V” device for valor in combat.
He is survived by his wife, Edie S. Ayers to whom he was married for twenty-three years; a brother, Jacky D. Ayers (Emily); nephew, Kevin Ayers (Christina); and a niece, Christie Nelson (Chris); and three great-nephews.
Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Hester V. and Christine Norman Ayers; a sister, Faye Ayers; and his adoptive paternal grandparents, Richard V. and Mamie K. Ayers who raised him and his brother, Jacky.
The body will be cremated, to be followed by a private memorial service to be held at a later date. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 12, 2016, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the residence.
The family suggests contributions in memory of LaVern be made to Holmes Bible College Scholarship Fund, 4901 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, SC 29617.
