Dessie Ruth Hammond was born on 18 March 1917 in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, the daughter of William Flint Hammond (1892-1961)and Margaret Alice Hunt Hammond (1896-1981). She was first married to Charles Valentine Riley (1903-1986) in Oklahoma. They were later divorced. She was then married to John Dwight Black (1917-2009) on 10 June 1950 in Phoenix, AZ. He had been married to Dessie's younger sister, Leona Bernas Hammond Black (1921-1971), who had divorced. They resided in Sacramento, CA for many years. She was widowed in 2009. She died on 10 April 2011 in Sacramento, CA at the age of 94. She was interred at Francis Cedar Grove Cemetery.
