Bluford Stice, son of Moses Stice and his first wife, Elizabeth March, became a widower in 1861 when his wife died 9 days after the birth of their last child, William Martin Stice. According to the family history records, Bluford Stice was killed by a falling tree, the roots having come loose by the hydraulic mining in a silver mine in Baker City, Oregon. This tragedy occurred two years after the death of his wife, leaving his children as orphans. The two youngest children, Lafayette Stice and William Martin Stice went to live with Bluford's married daughter, Lurinda Stice Harris and her husband Henry Harrison Harris.
