His first marriage was to Cornelia Redd (Red) in Lee County, AL in 1871. By 1875 they were settled in Bastrop Co, TX as their two daughters were born there. Annie Leola Smith was born in 1875 and Nancy Austin Smith in 1876. Cornelia died sometime between the July 1880 census and the remarriage of Tom in Nov 1880.
Tom's second marriage was to Rosetta "Altha" Sherrill in Nov 1880 in Bastrop Co. The following Nov 1881 she had also died.
In April 1882 Tom married Rosetta's sister, Georgia Sherrill in Bastrop Co. TX. Their children were: Mary Elizabeth Smith b. 1883; Bessie Susan Smith b. 1886; and Henry Gordon "John" Smith b. 1888. Georgia died in Apr. 1895 in the Smithville area.
Tom then married Nancy Jane Rice Sawyer in Sept. 1895. She died in Jan. 1901. Both she and Georgia are buried at the Sawyer Cemetery in Fayette Co, TX.
Lastly Tom married Mary A. Cox in Sept. 1901 in Bastrop Co. She died in Bastrop Co. in Aug. 1917. It is not know when or where James Thomas Smith died. It is believed he is buried in an unmarked grave in the Waelder, TX area. He has only been located on one census record (1880) and no death information has been found.
