Catherine Coyne was the daughter of Michael Coyne and Mary Reed from Ireland. They immigrated to Canada. Catherine had older siblings, Mary and George, and younger ones named Wallie, Louella, Margaret, and John. In 1870, Catherine came into the United States. She married Timothy Ward in 1871, probably in Kansas. Their daughter, Catherine "Katy" Coyne, was born in Glasgow, MO in 1875. She married William Charles "Bill" Kelton on July 18, 1889 in Crawford County, AR. They were the parents of William Roy, Walter Ray (changed his name to Ray A.), Harry Pete, and Thomas Elbert. The first two children were born in Arkansas and the last two were born in Webb City, Missouri.

Thomas had been born in April 1904. On March 29, 1905, Bill sold his house in Webb City and he and the children moved to Monett. Sometime after Thomas' birth, Katy became unwell and moved in with her parents in Monett. The nature of her illness is unknown. She was later taken to a hospital in Webb City, where she died on May 15, 1905.
