YORK, Maine - Grace F. Whitehouse, 96, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, surrounded by loved ones.

Grace was born in Portsmouth on March 25, 1908, to Albert and Effie (Freeman) Berry. She was the last survivor in her family of five brothers, Tracy, Arnold, Elton, Mayland and Hollis, and two sisters, Lillian Berry and Olive Soule.

She was raised and educated in the north end of the city known as Christian Shore. She married Harold Whitehouse on June 14, 1926, and later moved to the south end area known as Puddle Dock. In 1946, she moved with her family to Madison Street and lived there for 58 years. In June due to frail health, she moved to York to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She often referred to her months in York as some of the happiest days of her life. Her mother was born in York.

Grace was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Portsmouth for 70 years. She later joined the Middle Street Baptist church and was an active member of the Women's Bible Study Class, Ann Judson Fellowship and Sunday school. In 2003, she was honored with the presentation of the Deacon's cane as the oldest living member of the church. Grace was also active in the Portsmouth Senior Center, Odiorne Point Tour Guides and for many years was Hospitality chairwoman of the Golden Age Club, sending out hundreds of cards. She was an avid reader and loved going to thrift shops, yard sales and weekly visits to Pic'n Pay. She enjoyed camping in the White Mountains and following her husband's retirement spent several winters in St. Petersburg, Fla.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Sr.; her sons, Robert and Gene; and her daughter, Barbara Matthews. She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Foster, and son-in-law, Jack, of York; her daughter, June Brower of Stockton, Calif.; and her son, Harold Whitehouse Jr., and daughter-in-law, Ruth, of Portsmouth; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and her cat, Joy.
