Avril Marie was born January 26, 1924 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Wallace and Marie Recker Heberling. She married Albert Clark. She later married George Bernzen and he preceded her in death in 1987.
Avril Marie was a graduate of St. Rose Grade School and a 1941 graduate of Quincy High School where she was very active in music and theatre productions. She was a 1945 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame Conservatory of Music with Sister M. Angela as teacher and a graduate of Voice Training with Lillian Brown Inghram. She was a 1945 graduate of Quincy College with a B.S. degree in chemistry and biology. She taught piano and voice lessons in her parent’s home while going to school. Her graduate studies were at Washington University in St. Louis and at Central Michigan University in Education.
Avril Marie was a microbiology instructor at Quincy College from 1967-1971. She was Program and Educational Director at St. Mary Hospital School of Medical Technology from 1967-1987 where she administered the program and taught classes to senior college students. She counseled and instructed students in proper professional demeanor as well as the clinical sciences. She was also Director of the Lab at St. Mary Hospital.
From 1978 -1987 Avril Marie was adjunct professor at nine universities and colleges including Quincy College where she presented seminars and worked on curriculum. Following retirement, her true love was to teach voice and piano lessons.
She was a member of the Church of St. Peter, Altrusa, and the local and international chapters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. One of her passions was volunteering for her community. She served in leadership capacities on many local nonprofit boards and was instrumental in raising money for the Community Theatre at the Oakley Lindsey Center and founding the Muddy River Opera Company. She was also a member of the Quincy Conservatory of Music
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Queen (Dan) Hysler of Springfield, IL; her grandson, Kristopher (Heather) Queen of Naperville, IL, and 5 great grandchildren.
Avril Marie was also preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter, Alissa Queen, and 2 brothers, Fred and George Heberling.
