We find the place of birth listed as Haverstraw which was formed in 1788 while still part of Orange County NY.
We believe Stephen one of ten (10) sons plus one daughter descending from Joseph Cohoon & Nancy 'Polly' (Parr) Cohoon. He was the husband of Margaret 'Peggy' Cole.
The birth of children show that they were in NY about 1814, PA in the 1820's, Ohio in the 1830's (Delaware County) moving to Jasper County Illinois in the 1840's. Illinois records show he had bought four(4) tracts of lands = 247.39 Acres @ $1.25 per acre about one mile west of Yale.
Jasper county book 'E' p-267 shows he sold one tract of land for $1000.00 on Oct. 20, 1858. Family story says he packed a trunk and went to Chicago to see eye doctor. He was murdered and only his body was shipped home. I found the probate records for Stephen was missing out of box #366 when researching in Jasper county.
My understand is he was buried in the Yale cemetery near his home but no visible mark has been located. Uncle Harry (1887-1983) told me that Stephen had seven (7) sons but no girls. From records and family :
James , Joseph Campbell , Charles , Corneilius Carl , John , Andrew Jackson & George Washington.
We should note that there was a younger Stephen in Delaware Ohio connected with our Stephen. This younger Stephen went to Missouri and from his family we have genealogy records but of last report his parents where unknown.
