John A. Froehlich of Redding, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, March 5th, 2011. Jack, as he was known by most, was born February 1, 1928 in Chicago, Ill. to Iola Howe Froehlich and John M. Froehlich. He grew up in the city of Chicago and spent summers with his relatives in Kentucky. Jack was graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He served in the Army and while stationed in Maryland, he met his wife, Margaret Walden Froehlich. They were married on April 12, 1955. Jack began his career as a mechanical design engineer for Bendix Corporation in Baltimore and the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. After moving to Connecticut in 1968, Jack worked for Perkin-Elmer, most notably as the task manager of the Hubble Space Telescope Primary Mirror Assembly. While working for Perkin-Elmer Corporation and later for Medical Laboratory Automation, Inc., he was granted patents for several inventions and designs. He loved his work and spoke spiritedly about his projects on nuclear reactors, bubble chambers, x-ray lithography, optics, and cryogenics. Jack immersed himself in an active retirement, enjoying his family and friends to the fullest. He served as president of the Perkin-Elmer Retiree Club for six years. A resident of Redding for more than 40 years, Jack was an active member of the community, worshipping at Sacred Heart Parish in Georgetown, serving on the Commission for the Elderly, and volunteering at the annual Mark Twain Library book fairs. Jack will be remembered for his generosity, optimism and wide-ranging interests. He was a documentarian, a skilled chess player, and fervently embraced new technology. An Eagle Scout, he was later Committee Chairman for Redding Boy Scout Troop 15. Jack took great pride in his property at Hawks' Nest, where he cultivated his favorite flowers, hellebore, iris, and clematis. He championed the bluebird and the bluebird houses he designed and built have been shared with many. A devoted husband and father, Jack was endlessly grateful for his family and many blessings. Jack and Margaret, married 55 years, raised eight children and opened their home to 16 foster children. Besides his wife Margaret, he is survived by children, Catherine Ednie and her partner, Sam DiBella of Stamford, Andrea Carlson and her partner, Randy Hooper of Hampden, Maine, Greg Froehlich and his wife, Denise of Thetford, Vt., Carl Froehlich of Redding, Kristin Froehlich and her husband, Elton Grunden of Wilmington, Del., Rosemary Froehlich of Greenwich, Meg Scellin and husband, Jason of Hamburg, Ill.; his grandchildren, Alexandra Chow and husband, Richard of Stamford, Elias Ednie of Kona, Hawaii, John Carlson of Acworth, G.a, Esmé Hoehn and husband, Oscar of Marblehead, Mass., Blair Ednie of Denver, Colo., Rowan and Nathaniel Froehlich of Thetford, Vt.; and great-grandson, Oliver Chow of Stamford. He was predeceased by infant daughter, Mary; son, David and brother, James. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Church Street, Georgetown, Connecticut on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jack's memory may be sent to the Salvation Army.
