Nano was born to Thomas Martin and Grace (Elgin) Martin; he was one of nine children. He spoke fondly of the times he spent in the orchards and the vineyards near Lakeport. He attended a Catholic school and also the California School for the Deaf near Berkeley, where he participated in football and baseball. He enjoyed archery and riding his motorcycle as a young adult.

Thomas married his wife, Joan Klein (Mead), on April 6, 1984, in Reno, Nev. Thomas and Joan continued to live in California until 1989, when they relocated to Idaho and later Washington. He was happy to return to his home, in Lakeport. Nano was a respected tribal member and Native dancer of the Big Valley Rancheria. He enjoyed attending powwows and spoke with great pride of his times dancing with other members of his tribe. His family remembers that even though he was blind in one eye and deaf, he never missed a beat - he truly enjoyed dancing. He was an active man and enjoyed walking to and from the local bank and stores.

Thomas was a loving and devoted husband, always by his wife's side. He was a caring dad, grandfather, uncle and brother. He was dearly loved by all who knew him. His wife will cherish the memories of her beloved husband, who made her smile and laugh every day of their 31 years of marriage. His children and grandchildren will always remember his youthful soul and his love for "sweets," especially old-fashioned doughnuts, pies and cake. His Chihuahua, Peppy, held a special place in his heart. He shared many fun times with his family bowling, playing cards or checkers, hunting, fishing and participating in local tribal activities.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Martin and Grace Martin; and siblings Tommy and Kenneth Martin, Catherine Ray, Nancy Ramos, Sybil Brown, Lorena Bermudez, Ruby Martinez and Evelyn Madrid.
