Pioneer Builder In Early Temple, J. H. Davis, Dies

J. H. Davis, 90, pioneer Temple builder, died Sunday morning at his home at 201 North Seventh Street. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church today at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Grady Metcalf and Rev. B. B. Blaylock conducting the rites. Burial will follow in Hillcrest cemetery with Pace funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Davis was born in Crab Orchard, KY, Nov. 17, 1854, and came to Texas with his parents at the age of 15 years. He lived in Davilla, where the family settled until he married Miss Ella Stewart. The couple lived in Rockdale until 1881 when in July of that year they came to Temple immediately after the townsite was laid out.
Mr. Davis entered the architectural and building trades here at that time and was constantly engaged in them until 1932, a period of 51 years. He built the second brick building in Temple and the first brick residence. In 1933, while a member of the board of equalizers, he was injured in an auto accident, which forced him to retire, although he continued to do some architectural work.
He was a member of the First Baptist church in Temple and Rockdale and had been so associated for more than 50 years. He built the First Baptist meeting house in Temple, near where the Kyle hotel now stands, in 1882 and his wife, who preceded him in death in 1938, was the first woman to join the church there. He was a member of the Maccabees and the Pioneer club.
He is survived by six children, Mrs. Pearl Davis Bennett, Miss Clara Davis, Miss Lillian K. Davis, Jack M. Davis, Dean H. Davis, all of Temple, and J. H. Davis Jr. of Austin; seven grandchildren; Harold K. Davis of Houston, Mrs. Hazel Johnson of Temple, D. G. Barnett of Philadelphia, William Bennett Davis and Mrs. F. L. Cox, both of Austin, Jack Davis and Dean H. Davis, Jr. both of New Orleans, and nine great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be B. N. Jarrell, T. C. Cloud, G. A. Callahan, W. E. Moore, Henry Blum and Harry Weinblatt.
