Barbara Ann Erlenbach died unexpectedly at her home in Mebane, N.C. on October 18, 1999. She was 65. Mrs. Erlenbach is a former resident of Brookfield where she lived for over 30 years, and is the daughter of the late George Washington Focht Freeman and the late Dorothy H. Pendleton Freeman.

Born April 12, 1934 in Bronx, N.Y., Mrs. Erlenbach attended Eastchester High School in Eastchester, N.Y. She graduated from Duke University in Durham, N.C. in 1956 with a degree in psychology. She is a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. After briefly living in Mississippi and West Germany, she settled in Brookfield with her family. Mrs. Erlenbach is a Charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brookfield, was a member of the church's Alter Guild and is a past Chairman of its Cemetery Committee. She is also a Daughter of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Erlenbach had a life long interest in horticulture. She was an accredited Master Judge of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, a Life Member of the Federated Garden Club of Connecticut where she was also a judge for more than 20 years, and an accredited Master Gardener of Connecticut and North Carolina. Mrs. Erlenbach had been active with the Garden Club of Brookfield since 1966 where she served as President in 1975-1977 and 1985-1987, and was named Woman of the Year by her club in 1974 and 1984. She chaired numerous flower shows in the community. Mrs. Erlenbach also served as a Board Member of the Brookfield Historical Society and participated in several committees, was a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 5 and a Tournament Duplicate Bridge Director. Mrs. Erlenbach became a Bronze Life Master in Duplicate Bridge in 1998.

Upon retiring to Mebane, N.C. in 1995, Mrs. Erlenbach continued her horticulture interests as the active president of the Margaret Brawley Garden Club of Durham, N.C. She was also the active Vice-President of the Durham Council of Garden Clubs and a member of the Piedmont-East Judges Council of North Carolina. Mrs. Erlenbach chaired the Spring Fling flower show in Durham held earlier this year and also chaired three successful flower show schools sponsored by the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Through the Master Gardener program, Mrs. Erlenbach shared her experiences with others under the Durham County Cooperative Extension. She continued her interests in quilting and needlepoint, donating her time and work to charity, and was also an avid genealogist.

Mrs. Erlenbach is survived by her husband of 41 years, Philip Ellis Erlenbach of Mebane, N.C.; her two sons, Paul Randall Erlenbach of Chapel Hill, N.C. and George Bradford Erlenbach of Charlotte, N.C.; by her daughter, Wendy Ann Ransbury of Pleasanton, Calif.; and by four grandchildren. Mrs. Erlenbach's family will hold a memorial service at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brookfield on Saturday, November 13, 1999 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Donations, in lieu of flowers, towards a permanent memorial to the memory of Mrs. Erlenbach can be made to the Barbara Erlenbach Memorial Fund, c/o Sarah P.
