Kinchen R. Womack was the son of Mansel Womack and his first wife Sarah Rogers, who married in Georgia in 1790. He was probably named "Kinchen Rogers Womack," but no record has been found with his full name.

Kinchen was born about 1800 in Georgia, probably in Hancock County. His father Mansel's name is found in deeds, taxes, militia lists and other records of Greene Co., Warren Co., Hancock Co., and Jones Co., Georgia from 1790 to 1817.

Kinchen came with his father and family to Alabama in 1818. He purchased land in Butler Co., AL in 1825, a purchase probably made when Kinchen married and moved out of his father's home. He apparently decided not to remain in Butler County, however, and made land purchases in Wilcox County, as well. He was counted in Wilcox County in the 1830-1840 censuses, and represented Wilcox County in the Alabama state legislature in 1840-1841.

In 1850, Kinchen was counted in the Monroe Co., AL census; he was age 50, born Georgia, a farmer with $1900 in real estate. He wrote his will in 1851 in Monroe County, and records indicate that he died that year.

His wife Mary Agnes E. (Jones?) was counted as head of household with her children in the 1860 Monroe Co. census. She then moved to Arkansas with several of her adult children, where she died in 1876.

Researcher Carolyn Cox of Ouachita County, Arkansas, corresponded with dedicated Womack researcher Ann McDonald about Kinchen's wife Mary. In 2001 Ann said she learned that Mary was a JONES, thanks to Carolyn Cox (no explanation or sources stated). I contacted Carolyn and asked about this maiden name in 2016, and she replied: "I do not remember where I got that information about Jones being Mary Agnes's surname. I have looked through my files at home to no avail! If Ann McDonald accepted it, I feel it must have been satisfactory. I haven't been to our library yet, but I certainly will go and check out some possibilities there in a few days. Womack was one of the first families I did, and I was not careful about documenting my sources. I regret that so many others have picked up on the name Jones and it's everywhere now."

I've searched for death certificates and other records of Kinchen and Mary's children, to see if their parents' names were stated on such documents, but could find nothing with their names and Mary's maiden name. If anyone corresponded with Carolyn Cox and/or Ann McDonald around 2001 and was TOLD the sources for Mary's maiden name being JONES, please share those sources with us. -- Annie Crenshaw
