Lyman was a man of education, a high school teacher. On June 1, 1917, he registered for the draft for World War I. He was inducted into the United States Army on Sept. 9, 1917 at Lawrence, NY. He served with Co.A, 306 M, G Battalion service as a Sergeant until his Honorable Discharge on July 12, 1918. The purpose of his discharge at this time was so that he could accept a commission.
He loved his wife and two daughters. He researched the family tree and published a book, "The Line of Robert Davison".
