JOHN NICHOLAS HERTZ

Well Known and Esteemed Citizen Passed Away This Morning After Long Illness

The death of John Nicholas Hertz, a well known and highly esteemed resident of Madison, occurred at 8:30 o'clock this morning at his home at 829 west Third street after a long illness. Mr. Hertz had been afflicted for a number of years but he had been confined to his room for the past two weeks only. His death was not unexpected.

The deceased was born May 31, 1848, in Buren Kreif, Saarlouis, Bezierk Trier, Rhineland, Germany, but had been a resident of Madison for many years. He was a member of St. Michael's church and was always faithful in his religious duties while his health permitted. He held a high place in the esteem of his neighbors, friends and associates who have known him for so long and he has now gone to his reward.

Besides a widow, the deceased is survived by a son, John, and three daughters, Mrs. Charles Layton and Mrs William H. Guinn, of this city, and a daughter who is now a nun and teaching school in Tell City. He also leaves one brother, Mr. Peter Hertz, of this city. To the bereaved relatives the sympathy of many friends is extended.

Funeral services will be held at St. Michael's church at 8 o'clock Saturday morning and the interment will be in the Catholic cemetery at North Madison.

Funeral of John Nicholas Hertz

Funeral services for the late John Nicholas Hertz, who died Wednesday morning at his home on west Third street, were held at nine o'clock this morning at St. Michael's church in charge of Rev. Charles Gerdon. The services were attended by a large number of friends and relatives of the decedent who was held in high respect by all. Following the services at the church the remains were taken to St. Patrick's cemetery at North Madison for interment.

The following nephews of the decedent served as pall-bearers:

DEATH OF NICHOLAS HERTZ

Well Known Madisonian Dies After Long Illness-Was Native of Germany

Nicholas Hertz, well known and respected citizen of west Third street, died at 8:30 o'clock this morning at his home after a long illness. He had been an invalid for the past 20 years.

The decedent was born in Germany, May 31, 1848, and came to this country when a lad. He worked for many years at the Weber brewing company had had resided in Madison most of the time since coming to America. A widow and several grown children survive.

Funeral services will be held a eight o'clock Saturday morning at St. Michael's church and the burial will be in the North Madison Catholic cemetery.
