Katie Hisaye Shigeno, 90, of Ontario, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016 at an Assisted Living Home in Ontario, Oregon, with her family by her side.

Katie was born in Marysville, California, to Seijiro and Hiroye Kawakami, and was the fifth of six children. She lived in California until World War II, when her family was evacuated to the Merced Assembly Center in California. Her family stayed there for about three months before they volunteered to thin beets in Montana. They worked in Montana for a year before she, her father, and her sister were sent to Camp Tule Lake in California.

After the war, Katie’s dad settled in Emmett, Idaho to farm, and that is where she met her husband, John Shigeno. John and Katie were married November 19, 1945 and moved to Ontario in 1951, where they lived out their lives.

Katie was a hard working wife and mother, raising their five children, cooking, sewing, and gardening. She loved to cook and was very good at creating her own dishes which are now almost impossible to replicate. She helped at the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Church and was usually found downstairs in the kitchen. She loved to read, and always preferred an actual book to any new technology her family tried to give her.

Katie loved any family get together, and especially enjoyed the times that Las Vegas or Reno were the meeting places. She frequently traveled to visit her grandchildren and to watch them in their sports and activities, and later to watch her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children: Tina Gibson, Ann Francis, Gary Shigeno, Bob Shigeno and Steve (Lynn) Shigeno; her eight grandchildren: Stuart (Krista) Bailey, Scott Gibson, Kelli Maculley, Todd (Mary) Shigeno, Blake and Cheri Shigeno, and Jamie and Terilyn Shigeno; four great-grandchildren: Douglas and Quinton Bailey, Evan Bauer, and Benjamin Shigeno; one brother, Fred (Rose) Kawakami; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John Shigeno; her parents; and her four siblings.

The family wishes to thank the loving, caring, and compassionate staff of Presbyterian Community Care Center, Brookdale Senior Living, Encompass Hospice, and Signature Hospice for their care of Katie during the final months of her life.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 30 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Four Rivers Cultural Center. Please RSVP to Mike Iseri ([email protected] or 541-889-8691) by May 31. A private burial was held for the family on Saturday, April 2. Arrangements are under the direction of Lienkaemper Chapel, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Church or a charity of your choice.
