STEEL SUCCUMBS TO
HEART ATTACK
Leaves Fine Record
Served Two Terms as Head
of the Harvey City
Council During
1909-1913

Edward Martin Adams, twice
mayor of Harvey and one of its
best known former citizens, died
on Wednesday morning at Hot
Springs, Arkansas, from the effect
of a heart attack suffered two
weeks ago. He was the first vice president
and general manager in
charge of sales and a director of
the Inland Steel company.
A big figure in the steel indus-
try in Chicago, his career was like
that of the heroes of Horatio Al-
ger stories. He came to Harvey
from Stockton, Ill., as local
agent of the Illinois Central, later
joined the forces of the Buda
company, serving as purchasing
agent and in other capacities, and
in 1907 went with the Inland Steel
company as its secretary in
charge of credit.
From the start he was active in
the sales department, and all
through his career with Inland
maintained his contact with that
division. In 1918 he was elected a
director of that company, in 1921
a vice president and secretary,
and on January 31, 1922, first vice
president and general manager of
sales, which titles he held at his
death.
Mr. Adams was born on December
1, 1876 at Cherry Valley, Ill.
He was married to Adele Kester.
Mrs. Adams and one daughter,
Mrs. Samuel Carson Pirie Jr., survive
him. A brother Albert lives
at Kansas City, and a sister, Mrs.
Hattie Midkirk, at Belvidere, Ill.
Mr. Adams, who was one of
the most capable and best-liked
mayors of the city, was elected in
1909, and again in 1911 for two year
terms.
Mr. and Mrs. Adams left Harvey
in 1914. At the time of his
death their residence was the
Lake Shore Drive Hotel, 181 East
Lake Shore Drive.
Mr. and Mrs. Adams left Chicago
for Hot Springs late in
March planning to spend a vacation
there. On April 24 Mr. Adams
suffered a heart attack from which
he died two weeks later.
The body was brought to Chicago
today, and the funeral is to
be tomorrow afternoon at Rose
Hill chapel, with interment in
that cemetery.
Mr. Adams was a member of the
commercial committee of the
American Iron and Steel Institute,
and of Bob O’Link, Exmoor and
Westward Ho golf clubs, the Tavern
and Midday social clubs, and
the Chicago Athletic association.
