James was one of the earliest Mercer County settlers, arriving one year before the county was organized in 1845 and lived on his farm in Morgan Township for over 50 years.
In 1863, James assisted in organizing Company M, 2nd Missouri Cavalry, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenent. They participated in the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee; and served under General Thomas during the Siege of Nashville.
Died age 83y, 6d. Shares stone with Mary Dykes.
