SCHERER HISTORY By Simon as told by Ervin
Andreas Scherer and Anna Eva Beugler were born and married in Grosswalstadt A M Mein, German. They came to America in the early 1850's with son Michael and Andreas' brother Johann Adam. They obtained passage money from Eva's family.
They docked in Boston and the men worked in a rope factory until it burned down in early 1855. While there, Eva and Andreas had two sons, Adam 1853 and Simon 1859. They left Boston in the spring of 1855 and came to Minnesota arriving when Simon was about five months old.
Andreas could have gotten land in Golden Valley but he didn't want that because the Maple trees weren't big enough so he went to Medina where he pre-empted 160 acres and built a sod house where they lived for about a year. Johann Adam also pre-empted 80 acres.
While they were settling the land, one of the older boys died and is buried on the farm. The other died a few years later and is buried in Holy Name Cemetery. They also had more Children besides Simon born January 5, 1855-died June 17, 1942.
As there was no Catholic church in the area for three years, they could not attend mass. Finally a missionary came and had mass in different homes. When Holy Name Parish was started, Eva wrote to her relatives in Boston for money which they sent.
While the family was growing up, Andreas went around and helped the neighbors with their butchering as he was a butcher in Germany. Eva was also gone a lot as she was the local midwife. It was said the only mother she lost in childbirth was her daughter.
