Louis Anthony Vernon (Ludwig Vrana) was the youngest son of Cyril Vrana and Marie Spaniel. He reportedly left home during his teens and went to Dallas where he worked as a telegrapher until he left to serve in the United States Army during the First World War. After he was discharged from the army, he changed his name from Ludwig Vrana to Louis Anthony Vernon because, as he put it, no one could pronounce his name correctly. Shortly thereafter he married Mrs. Ola Mae Bristow, a widow with three children by a previous marriage. Five children were born to Louis and Ola Mae. He was good at wood carving.
