Cpl. Vaccaro of Deltona, Fla., was married just prior to his being deployed. He had also recently been submitted for Awards For Valor due to his bravery on the battlefield. Vaccaro received the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and Combat Medical Badge. Vaccaro was distraught about being away from the front lines while his platoon-mates engaged Taliban fighters. He volunteered to help recover wounded compatriots, but when he arrived at the scene he was killed instantly by a rocket propelled grenade. Besides his mother, Vaccaro is survived by his father, Nelson Vaccaro; his wife, Dana, brothers Vincent, and Ray, and a sister, Christina. An advanced medical training simulation center at Fort Drum will soon bear Vaccaro's name honoring his heroic efforts under adverse battlefield conditions that saved many lives. He was 23.
