Wayne grew up in Puyallup, Washington, graduating from Puyallup High School. He then moved to Wapato, Washington with his parents and worked in the family orchards. He joined the Army in July 1943. He served in the European theater during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked for the United States postal service as a rural letter carrier, retiring in 1979. His hobbies included his family, fishing, photography and raising a couple head of beef.

Wayne married Wilma Lorraine Leonard in 1946. They had five children - four daughters and one son.
