Opal was born September 6, 1926 in Quanah, TX to Fredrick Franklin and Saletia Ophelia Fain. The family moved to Lubbock, TX while she was at a young age. She met Leo Thurman on a trip to Hardeman County and they were married in Lubbock while Leo was serving in the Army in World War II. She was called most of her life by her middle name, Laverne. She went to work in Lubbock after the war and worked until retirement age as a building plan draftsman for several construction and architectural firms in Lubbock. She and Leo were married for 68 years at his death. Leo had been taking care of her for several years, and after his death she went into a nursing home (Phoenix House) in Lubbock and later in Fort Worth, where she passed away on March 22, 2016.

Opal is buried alongside Leo and within about 25 yards are buried her two sons, her mother and father, and all three of her brothers.
