William Johnson (W.J.) Smith, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008. He was born in Lawrenceburg, KY on February 13, 1922, the son of the late Porter and Frances Hanks Smith.

W.J. served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After earning his undergraduate degree from University of Kentucky and NYU, he completed his master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Kentucky.

He was a teacher and later spent the majority of his career as Postmaster in Lawrenceburg. At First Christian Church, he served as Chairman of the Board, Sunday school teacher, Elder, Youth Sponsor, Choir Member and was active in Christian Church statewide activities.
He was also President of the Anderson County Historical Society. W.J is survived by a daughter, Sheila (Cecil) McFarland, and son, Tom (Gayle) Smith, of Lawrenceburg, KY; six grandchildren, all of Lawrenceburg, KY; and one great-grandson.
W.J. was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy Fillmore Toll Smith.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 3PM, Monday, June 9, 2008 at First Christian Church with visitation beginning at Noon. Contributions may be made in honor of W.J. to First Christian Church, 300 South Main Street, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342. Arrangements by Care Cremation Service.
