Mary Appler Moon
YORK Mary Appler Moon, 96, died peacefully in her home at Autumn House East. Mary was born in York to her parents, the late Albert and Lottie (Bucher) Appler. She was a graduate of Hanover High School, Susquehanna University, and Temple University. Mary was a high school and college English teacher. She served her country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and worked as a Communications Officer during WWII. Mary was devoted to her family. She had a life-long interest in reading and travel. She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne V. Moon of Wilmington, Del.; a son, Geoffrey A. Moon and his wife, Judith of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Erin M. Bickley and Samantha R. Moon; and two great-grandchildren, Aidan D. Bickley and Estella L. Bickley. Also surviving is a sister, Peggy May Himes of Colorado. Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Andrea; a brother, Clefton Appler; and a sister, Ruth Bressi. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 17, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Matthew H. Stillman, pastor of St. Paul's Wolf's Evangelical Covenant Church, will officiate the service. Following the service, the York County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military rites at the funeral home. A private burial will follow the service in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg. In lieu of flowers, it was Mary's wish that memorial contributions be made to Veterans in Need, 100 W. Market St., York, PA 17401.
