Eleanor Josephine "Nellie" Cottrell was the daughter of James Lewis Cottrell and Ann E.J. Evans. When Eleanor was a child, her family moved from Dallas County, Alabama to Trinity County, Texas. A few years later they moved to Cherokee County, Texas. Nellie followed her parents and grandparents into the field of education. She taught school for a year in Cherokee County, Texas. One of her students, Perry Irwin Wallace, later became her husband. They were married on December 29, 1870. Perry and Nellie were the parents of six children - Percy Floyd Wallace, James Herbert Wallace, Joel William Wallace, Maud Wallace Tilley, Perry Benton Wallace, and Pleasant Rutherford Wallace.
