The 1900 Census shows that Mary J. Barrows was born in Dec. 1825 in Kentucky and had 14 children, 6 living at that time.
Note: In June, 2008, Harold H. Dams, a great-grandson of Austin and Mary's daughter Matilda, stated that Mary Barrows' maiden name was Mary Jane Chism and that their daughter Matilda married William Dams of Chesterfield, Illinois in 1865.
From the Burrton Graphic, dated Friday, August 10, 1906, pg. 1;
"Death of Grandma Barrows - Grandma Barrows died at her home south-east of Patterson at noon Monday from the infirmities due to old age. She was 80 years and 8 months and was born in Bowling Green, Ky. She moved with her parents to Illinois where she was married to Austin S. Barrows.
The family moved to Kansas and the late home in Lake township in 1875, which place has ever since been her home. She is survived by five children.
The funeral was held from the home Tuesday afternoon was largely attended by friends and neighbors who hold the venerable lady in high esteem. The services were conducted by Rev. Anderson of the M E church and interment was made by the side of her deceased husband in the Star cemetery."
