Dunham Wright, who was a close relative to Abraham Lincoln, followed the emigration West to seek his fortune in the mines like many others.

In 1865, while running a pack train to Sanger, he discovered a small creek his horses wouldn't drink from. With the assistance of some Indians who were camped at the site, he quickly discovered why. Natives considered the hot mineral spring to be "healing" waters.

As settlers moved into Medical Springs area, the springs became very popular. In time, a resort was built and Wright became known as the "Sage of Medical Springs". The resort grew to be a 40 room hotel, ballroom, a 50 foot concrete bathing pool, and other added features.

The post office opened on August 9, 1887. In August of 1918, a massive fire destroyed the resort's buildings. Even so, the site managed to operate in some fashion after Wright's death in 1942. Today the resort is closed.

"Dunham" was the son of John Dunham Wright and Celia HANKS Wright. He married Artemisia DUNCAN on July 4th, 1867.

Medical Springs Family cemetery is located on edge of bluff immediately above and N.E. of intersection. Persons buried here are all listed on a single monument.
