Erastus Strong Burress was the son of Allen Dale Burress and Eveline Strong of Phillips and St. Francis Counties, Arkansas. When Erastus was 6 or 7 years of age, his family moved to Marshall, Harrison County, Texas. Erastus married Henrietta Bass on November 16, 1859. They were the parents of one child, Lawrence Lafayette Burress, born on November 7, 1861. On March 8, 1862, Erastus enlisted in the 17th Texas Cavalry, Captain John J. Kennedy's Company (later became Company K) for a period of one year. He brought with him, his horse, valued at $140 and equipment valued at $50. Erastus was the company bugler from March 8, 1862 until May 22, 1862, when he became 2nd corporal. He is on the roster of troops that were captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Arkansas on January 11, 1863. Erastus is listed on the Roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois that is dated February 8, 1863. According to the Register of the Post Hospital at Camp Douglas, Erastus died on February 24, 1863 of pneumonia. He is buried at the Confederate Mound at Oak Woods Cemetery and is listed on the Confederate Monument as E. Burress.
