TIMOTHY STEVENS
Sarah Davis Stevens

Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis were the great-grandparents of Revolutionary patriots. These men included George Munroe III, Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall and Dr. William Aspinwall, and their kinsman Dr. Joseph Warren, all of whom were close friends and as well as second cousins.

Timothy Stevens was born in Newberry, Essex County, Massachusetts on September 21, 1641. His parents John Stevens and Elizabeth came to Massachusetts on the Confidence, which sailed from Southampton, England in 1638. They were accompanied by John's brother William, their mother Alice, and two servants. John and his family first settled in Newberry, Massachusetts. They went to Andover after 1642.

Timothy Stevens married Sarah Davis. She was the only child of Tobias Davis and his first wife Sarah Morrill, daughter of Isaac Morrill and Sarah. Tobias Davis and Isaac Morrill were members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts.

An examination of the marriages and descendants of the children of Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis reveals many ties that for generations are repeated by marriages and bloodlines in this family group. There are more connections than noted below, but what information is shared thus far clearly demonstrates these important family connections.

Children of Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis
One
Reverend Timothy Stevens married first Eunice Chester, daughter of Capt. John Chester and Sarah Welles.

Eunice's maternal grandfather was Governor Thomas Welles of Connecticut.

Timothy Stevens and Eunice Chester had three daughters. Two daughters predeceased Eunice, and the other daughter died at a young age.

After Eunice died, Reverend Timothy Stevens married Alice Cook, daughter of Joseph Cook, Esq. of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Martha Stedman. Alice Cook's first husband John Whiting was a son of Reverend Samuel Whiting, Jr. and Dorcas Chester. John was a nephew of Reverend Joseph Whiting (Sarah Danforth).

Samuel Phipps was a son of Mary Danforth and her first husband Solomon Phipps. Samuel Phioos was a nephew of Sarah Danforth Whiting. Her husband Joseph Whiting was a brother of Reverend Samuel Whiting, Jr.

Two
Sarah Stevens, daughter of Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis, married Samuel Aspinwall. Their son Lt. Thomas Aspinwall was a first cousin of Mary Stevens, the mother of Dr. Joseph Warren. Lt. Thomas Aspinwall married Johanna Gardner. Descendants of Sarah Stevens and Samuel Aspinwall include Thomas Aspinwall Brewer.

Three
Lt. Joseph Stevens, son of Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis, married Joanna Winchester. Their daughter Sarah Stevens married William Williams.

Lt. Joseph Stevens married as his second wife Lucy Ruggles.

Four
Elizabeth Stevens first married Samuel Phipps, son of Solomon Phipps and Mary Danforth. Elizabeth Stevens and Samuel Phipps had three children. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth Phipps married John Abbott. Sarah married George Munroe. George's niece Mary Munroe married Samuel Sanderson, whose sister Esther Sanderson married Isaac Stearns.

Elizabeth Stevens (widow of Samuel Phipps) next married Benjamin Wellington. Samuel Phipps was living when his grandfather Thomas Danforth died, and his inheritance included land. Benjamin Wellington's sister Elizabeth Wellington is an ancestor of Harriet Hyde Fay who married Albert Brewer, which connects Albert's sister Mary Foster Brewer (Mrs. Thomas Aspinwall Brewer) to the Wellington family. Thomas Aspinwall Brewer is connected to Wellington by way of the Sparhawk family. Thomas Aspinwall Brewer was a descendant of Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis (see Sarah Stevens, above). Thomas Aspinwall Brewer was also a descendant of Solomon Phipps and Mary Danforth (as was Samuel Phipps, first husband of Elizabeth Stevens). Some discussion of Samuel Phipps and his inheritance from Thomas Danforth and others is found at the following link:

Five
Samuel Stevens, son of Timothy Stevens and Sarah Davis, first married Dorothy Weld. His second wife was Mary Calef, daughter of Robert Calef. Samuel and Mary's daughter Mary Stevens married Joseph Warren, Jr. and was the mother of physician and Revolutionary hero Dr. Joseph Warren.

Sumner descendants
Susanna Stevens married Judge John Sumner, brother of Increase Sumner, Governor of Massachusetts. Governor Sumner's sister Sarah married Ebenezer Davis, Jr. Their son Ebenezer Davis III married as his first wife Lucy Sharp and second to Lucy Aspinwall, daughter of Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall and Lucy Sparhawk. Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall was the son of Lt. Thomas Aspinwall and Johanna Gardner. Lt. Col. Thomas Aspinwall was a grandson of Timothy Stevens (subject of this memorial) by Sarah Stevens who married Capt. Samuel Aspinwall. See above for further notes on Aspinwall and Stevens, and related families.

Susanna Sumner (1730–1740) and Deacon Samuel Sumner (1732–1813) were the only two children of Susanna Stevens and Judge John Sumner.

Deacon Samuel Sumner (1732–1813) was a grandson of Samuel Stevens and Dorothy Weld, and a nephew of Sarah Stevens Aspinwall. By his mother Susanna Stevens (Mrs. John Sumner), who was half-sister of Mary Stevens Warren, Deacon Samuel Sumner was a first cousin to Revolutionary hero Dr. Joseph Warren.
