John was a veteran of the War of 1812. According to a pension application (applied for by Dorothy after his death), he enlisted August of 1812 in the 17th Infantry US as a Corporal, and served first in Robert Edwards Company, then in Richard Hightower's Company. He was discharged on the 10th of March, 1814.
Right after the 1830 Kentucky Census was taken, John and his family moved across the river to, and settled in, Putnam County, Indiana. This was a large migration, possibly related to a Cholera epidemic, and included several other families which are related - RICE, ROBERTS, and WALDEN families, to name a few. They can be found in the 1840 and 1850 census, living in and around Washington Township.
In 1850, John and Dorothy were living on the farm of Roland and Elizabeth (Maxwell) Rice. It is assumed that John was buried on the Rice Family Farm, or nearby.
John and Dorothy had the following known children:
Thomas Maxwell (1811-????)
Elizabeth B. Maxwell (Rice) (1814-1879
Mary Ann "Polly" Maxwell (Roberts) (1814-1886)
John E. Maxwell (1822-1891)
James Roberts Maxwell (1826-1862)
Girl Maxwell (appears on 1830 KY census)
Allen Eldon Maxwell (1830-1887)
William Roberts Maxwell (1832-1910)
Joseph Maxwell (1833-1879)
