CHARLES JAMES DIES SUDDENLY WHILE FISHING
Retired Miami Businessman, 63, Prominent Here in Church, Masonic Affairs
Charles H. James, 63-year-old retired Miami businessman, died of a heart attack while fishing on Grand lake, 12 miles southeast of Afton, at 9:10 a.m. today.
The sportsman was taken by Treverse (RO) Staton, a fishing companion and close fried, to the Johnson hospital in Afton where he was pronounced dead. Staton said James did not complain of being ill before he collapsed on the lake shore.
After moving to Miami from Wagoner, James opened an automobile tire and accessory shop in 1922. He operated the business on South Main street until he retired about eight years ago.
An elder in the First Presbyterian church, James was high priest of Miami chapter No. 93 of the Royal Arch Masons, a past eminent commander of the Miami Commandery No. 49 of Knights Templar, a member of the Miami Masonic council and the St. Andrew council No. 11 of the Red Cross of Constantine.
James was an inveterate fisherman and sports enthusiast. When he operated his tire shop during the ’30’s “Charley” made it a practice, if possible, to give part-time employment to football players attending Northeastern A&M college.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Charles H. James of the home at 322 C street northwest; a daughter, Mrs. Robert McGaw of Eldorado, Tex., and a sister, Mrs. Daisy Speer of McAllen, Tex.
The body was received by the Cooper Funeral home. Arrangements for services and burial are incomplete.
